Because the numbers look bigger when dividing by 1,000,000 instead of 1,048,576... and they can BS you into thinking they are giving you the service (or device) you paid for instead of ripping you off.So why are these websites telling everyone the opposite?
For network speeds, you are correct, speeds are measured in "megabits per second", which is 8 bits per byte.
For hard drives, somehow we've allowed the drive manufactures to lie right to our faces and sell us "1 Terabyte" drives that are actually 953674 megabytes in size. They divide by 1,000,000 to make their drives look higher capacity than they actually are.
